Sonipat [Haryana] (India), 6th Aug (ANI): Following wrestler Bajrang Punia’s gold medal win at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, extensive preparations are underway to welcome this star wrestler back home.
Indian star wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched the gold medal for India after winning the final against Canadian Lachlan Mcneil in the men’s 65kg at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.
This medal was also his third consecutive CWG medal. He had won gold in 2018 CWG and a silver medal in the 2014 edition of the multi-sport event. His family was praying before the match for Bajrang to win and the prayers were certainly not in vain as he made the whole nation proud by winning the final.
“He won gold in 2018 on the Gold Coast and now gold again. He’s been putting in a lot of effort and all of his effort is showing now. We’re so happy it can’t be put into words, we will give him a big welcome when he comes back,” said Bajrang’s father, Balwan Singh.
“I hope he wins gold at the Olympics and at the World Championships as well,” he added.
His brother Harendra Punia was praying for his victory before his match said: “He couldn’t win gold at the Olympics but he made up for that by winning gold here. He will become world champion in the upcoming series for the country. He will have a great reception.
Bajrang has recovered from the injury he suffered at the Tokyo Olympics and will be aiming for more medals in future competitions.
Coming into the game, Punia was extremely dominant in the first half and didn’t let his opponent score. He finished with a 4-0 lead over McNeil late in the first period.
McNeil came back with a big effort and cut the deficit two points to make it 2-4. Punia regained the lead after scoring two more points. The Indian didn’t look back and won the game 9-2. (ANI)
