Destiny 2 Arrivals Iron Banner Highlights The Only Issue With Timing I Have
This Week at Bungiethey talked about Iron Banner having its Season of Arrivals debut reset soon, as well as hopefully some world events (Pyramids on Titan?) that they didn’t mention.
I’ve seen enough here to get me hooked. While I don’t like the Iron Fellowship set, I do like the new shader, and I’ll grind at least a little for the two “recovered” IB guns, The Forward Path and The Fool’s Remedy, which roll with two new Iron Banner Benefits Only:
- Iron Grip – Improves weapon stability at the expense of reload speed.
- Iron Gaze – Improves weapon target acquisition at the expense of range.
Are they any good? Who knows, but they’re new and I want them.
But Bungie also said they are reducing the loot pool and bringing back eight weapons. These weapons will have their “clocks reset” and won’t be extinguished for a year, unlike most other Iron Banner drops you already have, which have a much shorter expiration date. Most of them, probably this fall.
- shiny sphere
- Raven Swarm
- Talons of the Eagle
- fox bite
- Mallet of Orewing
- Crimil’s Dagger
I have before expressed support for delay, because I think it’s a way to push the meta forward without having to constantly balance things for years. I won’t be sad when Mountaintop drops out of the raid/dungeon meta or Revoker is no longer in Trials. And I think Bungie did a good job of convincing me to look for new guns, because I really liked the last few seasons of guns, especially the arrivals this season. That’s not the problem.
The problem is that Bungie keeps bringing back old weapons that we already have, completely unchanged, and expects us to grind them, even though we already have masterful versions of the ones we love and use forever.
It’s a problem with the global loot pool, which has a whole bunch of drops like that, and it’s also a problem with these new Iron Banner weapons. You chase the exact the same reels you already have, the only difference being the little “Arrivals” symbol in the corner.
When the timeout was brought up a long time ago, I said that rotating old weapons would be fine as long as when they returned there was a reason to try to get them back. Namely, what I hope to see are weapons that spawn with different combinations of perks. As if you were going to bring Shining Sphere back, put Vorpal on it. If you bring back Crimil’s dagger, give him sustenance. Do you understand what I’m trying to say. But bringing back the exact same weapons with the same perks they had before does indeed feel like a total waste.
If you’ve decided that a weapon is balanced enough that you don’t need to be in sunset, you just need to flip a switch and allow that weapon to infuse up to the new “re-infuse” cap. This way, people could keep their absolute favorites and at least hope that a day may come when they will be allowed back into the pool for a year. But you don’t make people regrind the exact same roll, you just let them steep. The exception would be if these weapons came back with different perks, so I can see how that would be acceptable, and that’s what we’ve seen with old Year 1 weapons showing up in the new pool. But that’s not what’s happening here with the current pools, and I’m looking for drops that I literally already have.
Possibly the weapons of the Iron Banner will be have new benefits and I’m too quick to judge. But they haven’t said anything about it, and that’s the only aspect of the delay that continues to bother me. If you’re okay with bringing back a gun with specific rolls for a year, just let people use the one they already have. Nobody wants to farm the exact same roll twice, just ask Borderlands 3 players who have to do this whole dance every three months with level increases.
I think most aspects of timeout are great, but it’s something worth looking into. And for now, I’m definitely keeping my absolute favorites, even if they get the sunset, in hopes that someday that might change and I can bring them into peak activities again.
