Farmers demand relaxation of FAQ standards amid distress sale – The New Indian Express
BERHAMPUR: Farmers in Ganjam district have demanded a relaxation of Fair Medium Quality (FAQ) standards in the ongoing procurement process as Mandis would refuse to accept discolored paddy damaged due to untimely rains, forcing them at the distress sale.
Expressing their resentment, the farmers said the irregularities continue despite claims of strict supervision by the administration, as supervisors rarely attend the tasks. Taking advantage of this, the millers also illegally ask for an extra 5 kg of paddy per bag and refuse to buy if the farmers do not comply. This causes a lot of harassment as registered farmers’ tokens are only valid for one month and they are often forced to accept illicit demands from millers.
However, Civil Supplies officials denied the allegations. The District Civil Supplies Officer, P Munda, said the department was not aware of any such issue and would take action if the allegations were found to be true.
Meanwhile, the Rushikulya Rayat Maharabha (RRM) has requested the intervention of Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal to review the plight of farmers and relax QNW standards in the district.
