Frank Reich: Couldn’t be happier to have Matt Ryan as our quarterback
Nothing worked out for the Colts in their 24-0 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday, so it’s no surprise that Matt Ryan looks bad.
The 37-year-old quarterback completed just 16 of 30 passes for 195 yards. he was sacked five times and fumbled once, although Indianapolis did not lose it.
Still, head coach Frank Reich expressed confidence in his flagman on Monday, noting that a lot of what was wrong happened around Ryan.
“I mean yesterday’s protection wasn’t our best effort. He was coerced several times,” Reich said during his press conference. “There are still mistakes that he made, that we all make, but I think overall – look, I understand how the quarterback position is. You’re really dependent on everyone there, but you’re the center of it all, so you have to make it work.
“What I love about Matt is that he takes responsibility. He’s the leader. I couldn’t be happier to have him as our quarterback. He’s an elite leader and I believe “Really that he can be an elite player in this offense. We all have to pull ourselves together. We all have to carry our own weight, each one of us, including him and everyone else on this offense.
In two weeks, Ryan completed 60% of his passes for 547 yards with one touchdown, four interceptions and five fumbles including one loss.
The 0-1-1 Colts have another tough game against the Chiefs on tap for Week 3.
