THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Police set up a liaison mechanism with retired officers to verify their welfare after the death of a former IPS officer went unnoticed. The deputy inspector general of the police headquarters will be responsible for keeping former officers informed.
The death of S Chandrasekharan, a 1957 consignment officer who died in Chennai on Friday, was not brought to the attention of the department. However, the matter was brought to the attention of a section of officers through unofficial channels, following which a decision was taken to appoint an IPS officer to verify the welfare of the retired officers and keep informed by telephone or other electronic means. .
The AIG will connect with retired officers to verify their current status and will also contact law enforcement authorities in the state where the officer resides. The AIG will also ensure that the address and contact number of all retired IPS officers are included in the Police Headquarters Connectivity page. The contact details of officers who had retired to the rank of SP within the framework of the IPS will be collected for this purpose.
The deaths of retired IPS officers are a moment of mourning for the department, and Chandrasekharan’s silent death came as a shock to officers who felt that the camaraderie and bond between the officers was what made the police force special.
The AIG was tasked with informing and inviting retired officers about police duties. In the event that they do not show up and send messages instead, they should be read aloud to participants. The AIG has also been tasked with ensuring that retired officers receive messages from the State Police Chief on the occasion of Public Service Day.
The AIG will collect details of retired agents staying out of state so that they can receive assistance if needed. All serving and retired officers must be notified of the death of officers through the State Police Control Room.
