‘Never, ever been happier’: Euphoria’s Cassie vs. Maddy wins best fight

When Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) crashed her school play in HBO’s explosive Season 2 finale Euphoria, the students in the audience were on the edge of their seats — just like actual viewers watching the HBO drama at home. What unfolded next was pure chaos: Cassie and Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie) screamed, slapped, chased and clawed each other on stage to figure out how their friendship had fallen apart thanks in part to their toxic entanglements with Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) . Phew.

Unsurprisingly, this public brawl won Best Fight on Sunday night (June 5) at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards in Santa Monica, where Sweeney accepted golden popcorn at the Barker Hangar. Cassie vs. Maddy won vs. Black Widowof Black Widow against widows, free guyit’s Guy versus Dude, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ bus fight, and Spider-Man: No Coming Homeis the end of the battle.

“I wish Alexa was there so I could thank the amazing fans we have, because you’re all so amazing,” Sweeney said. “But I have to be honest, Maddie may have gotten the last punch, but Cassie has never, ever been happier.”

As Euphoria fans will surely remember, that last line is a reference to Cassie’s now-iconic line – “I’ve never, ever been happier” – which she says in the girls’ bathroom while crying hysterically over her relationship with Nate. And let’s not forget Maddy’s fan-favorite line that’s now turned into a must-have TikTok sound: “Wait, is this fucking piece all about us?”

It turns out that Cassie’s sister and playwright, Lexi (Maude Apatow), wrote the screenplay based on the real lives of her family and friends. Cassie and Maddy didn’t have it, but the rest of the audience loved the messy twist to the performance, with Rue Bennett (Zendaya) and Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer) begging for more. And so, to hell with the drama, the show went on

The 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards are streaming live from the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles right now on MTV, with Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED to follow. Find all the winners here.
