Relaxation of moisture content is not within the purview of the state government: Minister of Food.
Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, R. Sakkarapani, said the Tamil Nadu government cannot decide on the moisture level of paddy to be purchased through Direct Purchase Centers (DPCs).
Pointing out that when a similar situation occurred during the last supply season, the Union Government sent a three-member team to visit the Delta districts to assess the situation and, on the Based on the three-member team’s report, the moisture content rule has been relaxed, the food minister said while speaking to the media here on Thursday.
Since similar demands for relaxation of the moisture content rule have been made by farmers and farmers association, Tamil Nadu government would write a letter to Union government in this regard and paddy with a higher moisture content would be purchased after obtaining the consent of the Union Government, Mr Sakkarapani said.
Stating that so far 72,451 tons of ‘kuruvai’ paddy had been procured by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC), Thanjavur Zone, through 271 DPC, the Minister said that about 2 .50 lakh tons of paddy were likely to be procured during this season as the area under ‘kuruvai’ cultivation increased to 72,816 hectares from 66,000 hectares last season. A total of 1,97,633 tons of paddy were purchased during the last “kuruvai” campaign.
As of Tuesday (September 27), a sum of ₹155 crore had been credited to the accounts of 13,177 farmers who measured their paddy at DPCs, it added.
While complaint boxes have been placed in the DPCs to help farmers report misconduct in the DPCs to the administration, Sakkarapani said that it was proposed to create 5,008 clerk positions ( RC), assistants and security personnel at the TNCSC for posting in the DPCs which will be opened during this year. It had also been proposed to regularize the services of 250 CRs serving in the Society and to issue orders of appointment on humanitarian grounds to 78 people, the minister said.
The minister claimed that the election promise of the DMK government to issue family cards within a fortnight of request had been fulfilled pointing out that in the last 17 months the Company had issued 13.50 lakh of family cards.
